Ridington Lecture: American Indian Art
Apr 24 @ 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm

Harvey Markowitz, assistant professor of sociology and anthropology at Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Va., speaks at this annual event. Markowitz’s research examines the inter-relationships among American Indian religions, landscapes, cultures, histories and identities. He co-edited the book “Seeing Red: Hollywood’s Pixeled Skins,” published in March 2013, which reexamined the ways American Indians have traditionally been portrayed in film.

Walk MS: Westminster

Held annually in eleven communities across Maryland, Walk MS has become a success thanks to the Maryland community. This year, we anticipate more than 8,000 walkers will participate across the State and raise over $1 million for MS research, educational programs and client services.

College Choir Concert: “Make Them Hear You”

The McDaniel College Choir presents “Make Them Hear You” under the direction of Margaret Boudreaux, professor and department chair of the Music Department. The concert features the signature song, “Make Them Hear You,” from the musical “Ragtime,” as well as other pieces that reflect highly expressive music and poetry of all ages. The Madrigal Singers, McDaniel’s premier a cappella vocal ensemble, also perform on several selections.

Country Breakfast Buffet

The Ascension Country Breakfast is held on the first Saturday of every month from February to December. (There is no breakfast in January.) Come hungry, leave full.  Called the best in Carroll County by many of our customers, a full all-you-can-eat breakfast menu including pancakes, Hahn sausage, scrambled eggs, hashed brown potatoes, egg and ham casserole, sausage gravy and biscuits, creamed chipped beef, assorted fruit, assorted pastries, fresh brewed coffee, hot tea, hot chocolate, milk, and juices all at an affordable price.  Plenty of parking in the lot behind the church off Ralph St.

Chamber Music on the Hill: Pianist Nancy Roldán and Violinist José Cueto

Pianist Nancy Roldán and violinist José Cueto perform works by Turina, Beethoven, Poulenc and Piazzola.

Argentine-born Roldán has performed throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Latin America. She retired from the Peabody Conservatory in 2007 after serving on the faculty for more than 30 years.

Concertmaster for Concert Artists of Baltimore, Cueto has performed in his native Puerto Rico, as well as Argentina, Europe and the United States. He is resident artist at St. Mary’s College of Maryland and a faculty member at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.

 

Violinist José Miguel Cueto and Pianist Nancy Roldán in Concert

(This concert, scheduled for November, 2013, was postponed due to a power outage at McDaniel College. Happily, Nancy and José have returned! Their performance will be in beautiful “Little” Baker Chapel, McDaniel College.)

Acclaimed violinist José Miguel Cueto and pianist Nancy Roldán perform worldwide as solo, collaborative artists and with orchestras. This concert will include Franz Liszt’s Second Elegie S. 131, Beethoven’s Sonata Op. 30, No. 2 in C minor, plus works by Alberto Ginastera and Àstor Piazzolla. Meet the artists at a free reception immediately following the concert.

Carroll Live On Stage Presents Jesse Lynch’s Jazz 101

Carroll Live on Stage presents their last concert of the season on Tuesday, May 20 at 7:30 at Westminster High School.   Doors open at 7pm.  Jesse Lynch is no stranger to Live On Stage. He has played piano for popular veterans Daniel Rodriguez and The American Tenors and has wowed audiences of his own playing everything from Beethoven and Bop to free jazz and contemporary compositions.
With an extensive professional history as a vocal accompanist and coach, as well as a student of both jazz and classical performance, Jesse is a genre-defying musician with the ability and passion to take on any style of music. Joined on bass and drums, Jesse Lynch leads audiences on a journey through the evolution and history of jazz through music and multi-media presentation in his touring program Jesse Lynch’s Jazz 101.
This talented trio will crank up the heat on stage with explosive energy and electrifying technique in the sounds of Joplin, Charlie Parker, Louis Armstrong and other jazz greats.
