SUMMARY:FLICC Documentary Series: Runner
DESCRIPTION:2020; 1 h 27 m; NR \nWhen he was only 8 years old\, Guor Mading Maker (formally known as Guor Marial) ran from captivity in war-torn Sudan to eventually seek safety in the US. In his new life\, Maker began running again\, participating in high school track and field and eventually becoming a sensation and qualifying for the 2012 Olympics. But because the newly formed South Sudan was not recognized by the International Olympic Committee\, Maker had to fight to compete independently\, refusing to run for Sudan and taking a stand against its oppression. \nRUNNER depicts Maker’s difficult and triumphant journey from refugee to a world-renowned athlete\, told in intimate interviews with gorgeously animated flashbacks of Guor’s upbringing\, and culminating in a heart-wrenching reunion with his parents after a 20-year separation. His story is a distinctly inspirational one in which the indomitable human spirit emerges against all odds. \n\nCost:\n$8 Adults\n$6 ages 25 & Under and ages 60 & Up\n$27 Adult Full Series Subscription\n$21 Student/Senior Full Series Subscription\nSubscriptions are for either all matinee or all evening showings\nCCAC Members receive additional 10% off

SUMMARY:To Be Read: Finding Ruth by Ilka Knuppel
DESCRIPTION:For Adults. Ruth Rosa Louise Muhlmann was 20 years old when she was killed at Bernburg Euthanasia Center on March 31\, 1941\, one of over 300\,000 people with disabilities murdered by the Nazis. \nThe Nazi cover-up of her death in their secret euthanasia program\, Aktion T4\, was so effective that it was not until 2018 that the truth was discovered. Ilka Knuppel has carefully researched the history of her great-aunt\, Ruth\, and her family in Germany. \n‘Finding Ruth’ describes the journey that crisscrosses years and continents\, delves into dusty documents\, and pieces together bits and pieces of clues from various oral histories to unearth the true story of Ruth. Books will be available for purchase and signing. \nPresented by Carroll County Public Library and A Likely Story Bookstore with Park Books. Registration required. Visit site for details.

SUMMARY:Carroll 250 Speaker Series: The Dark Winter of 1776-1777
DESCRIPTION:Presented by John Laycock:  It is Christmas 1776\, and all is not well for George Washington and his Continental Army. They have suffered a string of defeats and have retreated into New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Fighting through a blizzard and smallpox\, Maryland Militia reinforcements start filling the New Jersey countryside. The story of Private Jacob Zoll and his company led by Captain John Ross Key is an under looked part of the Revolutionary War. This talk will share Private Zoll’s struggle as he begins his journey to fight for his liberty. \nMr. Laycock has a love of genealogy and local history. He is a member of the Westminster Sons of the American Revolution and the Historical Society of Carroll County. He lives in Sykesville with his wife and 3 kids. He can often be found watching his beloved Chicago Cubs and still can’t believe that they finally won it all.

SUMMARY:Genticorum
DESCRIPTION:Common Ground Downtown\nGenticorum is among the most distinctive voices of Québécois traditional music. \nIn French\, to describe the chemistry between people\, you say they have atomes crochus—literally\, that their atoms are interlaced. There’s no better way to talk about Genticorum. The trio’s connection is magnetic. In the filigree of their arrangements\, seamlessly melding fiddle\, flute\, accordion\, guitar\, foot percussion\, and voices\, there’s always an organic spark: At its root\, this is social music\, and audiences can’t help but feel the pleasure these three musicians get from playing together. \nFounded in 2000\, when fiddler Pascal Gemme and guitarist Yann Falquet met in Montreal’s trad scene\, Genticorum quickly earned international recognition for bringing out all the poetry and nuance of French Canada’s old songs and step-dance tunes. In 2015\, Nicholas Williams added his flute and accordion to the mix. Their compositions have become beloved standards at dances and sessions\, their approach influencing peers and younger musicians alike. They’ve won Canadian Folk Music Awards and performed everywhere from Scotland to Malaysia\, Egypt to Australia. With impeccable musicianship and infectious joie de vivre\, Genticorum is bound to draw you in. \nGenticorum | Performer’s Website
