SUMMARY:Bedlam in the Boro! (Final Year)
DESCRIPTION:Since 1995\, the members\, families & friends of Lineboro Volunteer Fire Department have conducted Bedlam in the Boro each year during the weekends of October. This old fashioned haunted attraction was built from the ground up by volunteers\, and has become an annual family tradition for so many of you. Most notably\, this has been a substantial fundraiser for LVFD. It has allowed us to prosper as a department and maintain the best possible emergency services to our community members. The popularity of our old-school haunted hayride and bone-chilling house of horror has drawn tens of thousands of people from across the region over the years\, bringing smiles and screams to people young and old. The countless hours of work behind the scenes\, (real) blood\, sweat\, tears\, enthusiasm and camaraderie it takes to run this event is extraordinary. Those who were lucky enough to help us make it happen know it is quite a special thing\, and it is a testament to our success and pride in our fire department. On even the darkest and coldest nights\, Bedlam in the Boro has truly brought light to the small town of Lineboro that we call home. Wether you sponsored us year after year\, donated your farm equipment\, allowed us to use your property\, or you were an actor or volunteer that helped us in creating the scares & laughs\, we want to share our sincerest gratitude. The support and contributions from all of you has grown LVFD into the progressive organization it is today\, and we cannot thank you enough. We are now 3 weeks away from the opening night of our 2025 season\, three decades later.\n\n\n\nTHIS WILL BE OUR 30TH AND FINAL YEAR \n\n\n\nWe too are saddened to let this event go\, but inevitably all good things must come to an end. It has been our pleasure to serve you (or scare you)! Lineboro VFD promises to provide the same level of service to our community with new fundraising efforts in years to come.\n\n\nIf you haven’t seen us yet\, or maybe it’s just been a few years- now is your last chance \n\n\n3200 square foot House of Horror\n4 mile long Haunted Hayride\nLow & slow smoked pit beef\, ham\, turkey\nTons of other hot food options\nClassic fall desserts and drinks\nCarnival games\nTunes & more \n\n\n\n\nThe Ticket Booth is Open 7:00PM – 10:00PM\nAttractions Remain Open Until the Last Person is Finished\nThe Hayride and House of Horror may be canceled in the event of inclement weather.\nTo Check on Ride Status in times of Inclement Weather\, Visit our Facebook Page or Call 410-239-GHOST (4467)

SUMMARY:HSCC's 2025 Annual Meeting – “From German Auxiliary to American Artist: The Life and Work of Frederick Kemmelmeyer”
DESCRIPTION:Mark your calendar for this year’s Annual Meeting of the membership on October 28\, doors will open at 11:30 a.m.\, lunch will be served at 12 p.m. The meeting will take place at the Westminster Riding Club\, 366 N. Colonial Avenue\, Westminster. A sandwich buffet and dessert will be provided by Lib’s Catering followed by Society business and the event’s keynote speaker. Our third annual Distinguished Awards and Volunteer of the Year recognition will also be presented. If you haven’t already done so\, please submit your recommendation for Distinguished Awards at Award Nominations – Carroll County Historical Society. \nThis year we will hear from A. Nicholas Powers\, Curator of Collections at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley. The title of his presentation will be “From German Auxiliary to American Artist: The Life and Work of Frederick Kemmelmeyer”. \nAt the end of the Revolutionary War\, some 3\,000 of the 30\,000 German troops fighting for the British cause chose to remain in America. Among them was Frederick Kemmelmeyer\, a surgeon’s assistant who deserted British forces as they pulled out of Charleston\, South Carolina. Kemmelmeyer re-emerged from the war as an itinerant artist working in Baltimore\, western Maryland\, and the Shenandoah Valley\, with a surviving body of work that tracks his evolution from a cultural German to a visually-literate German-American citizen. In addition to an impressive body of portraiture\, including one subject from Carroll County\, Kemmelmeyer produced genre paintings replacing recognizable images of European monarchs with American heroes like George Washington. In addition to exploring Kemmelmeyer’s life and extant works\, this lecture will also preview the MSV’s upcoming semi-quincentennial exhibition Revolutionary Valley\, which will feature works by the artist painted in the Shenandoah Valley. \nThe cost is $45 for members\, $55 for non-members. Please contact Laura Bankard to reserve your place today! Reservations and payments need to be received by October 14. \nCurrently we have two Exclusive Sponsorships: \nFood Sponsorship – $500\nSpeaker Sponsorship – $500 \nWe look forward to seeing you on October 28th!

SUMMARY:Carroll 250 Speaker Series: Francis Scott Key presented by Lou Giles
DESCRIPTION:This fascinating talk will focus on Francis Scott Key and will include his family and early years\, the War of 1812 and the Dr. Beanes rescue mission\, the Star-Spangled Banner\, religion\, politics (and major cases)\, and his views on slavery. \nPlease check back for registration information regarding this FREE talk. Registration will go through Carroll County Public Library\, once their November Calendar is available. \nMr. Giles retired in 2012 as a senior executive in the Defense Department. He presently serves as the President of the Society of the War of 1812 in the State of Maryland\, a patriotic organization limited to descendants of soldiers who fought in the War of 1812\, and is a member of the Boards of Directors and counsel to the Star-Spangled Banner Flag House in Baltimore. Mr. Giles also volunteers at the Maryland State Archives in Annapolis and as a docent at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine in Baltimore. \nAs a passionate amateur historian and genealogist interested in the War of 1812 in Maryland\, Mr. Giles enjoys delving into primary sources\, local archives\, and historical newspapers to uncover new findings and perspectives and sharing these findings through writing\, presentations\, and community engagement. \nMr. Giles first became interested in Francis Scott Key in 2014 when he was tasked with providing presentations on Key to visitors to Fort McHenry. His genealogy experience and knowledge of resources available at the Maryland State Archives and National Archives allowed him to uncover records on Francis Scott Key that provide a different perspective from most biographers of Key. He has published several articles on Key\, including identifying Key’s truce ship on which he authored the Star-Spangled Banner and Key’s views on slavery. \nHe was recently featured in local and national press reporting after winning an appeal against the Veterans Administration resulting in a ruling allowing enslaved black Americans who fought in early Wars of the United States as servants or waiters to be considered veterans. \nMr. Giles is a lifelong Maryland resident who holds degrees in physics\, electrical engineering\, and law. \nRegistration is not yet open for this event. Please visit the CCPL website to see when registration will open.
