SUMMARY:Carroll 250 Event: Doing History: An Archivist’s Approach to Uncovering the Past
DESCRIPTION:Join Kyle Dalton (Union Mills Homestead)\, Adrienne Smith (Gatehouse Museum)\, and Gwen Coddington (McDaniel College) for an engaging session exploring the theme of Doing History as part of the Semiquincentennial celebration. This conversation invites participants to step into the historian’s role—examining how archivists interpret evidence\, uncover silences in collections\, and craft inclusive narratives. Through an archivist’s lens\, attendees will gain insight into the historical method\, learn how community knowledge and oral histories shape our understanding of the past\, and discover how they too can “do history” in meaningful ways. This session emphasizes transparency\, collaboration\, and the evolving nature of historical interpretation\, encouraging public engagement with history as a dynamic and participatory process. \nRegistration is required and is now open for this event. SUMMARY:Carroll 250 Speaker Series: Patriots Buried in Carroll County Cemeteries
DESCRIPTION:There are an estimated 60 Revolutionary War Patriots buried in Carroll County across several cemeteries. Many of these are known but many more are likely lost to history. It is important to remember our Patriot ancestors. This talk will provide an overview of family cemeteries\, church cemeteries\, and town cemeteries located in the county and discuss Patriots buried there. \nMore importantly as we approach America’s 250th there are cemeteries that are known to be lost or in danger of being lost. Preservation of these Patriot ancestors’ graves is an important part of our American heritage and a sacred duty to keep their memory alive. \nJames Engler – Mr. Engler is a member of the Westminster Chapter\, Sons of the American Revolution. He has served in a variety of roles in the SAR\, including as president of both the Westminster Chapter and Maryland SAR\, as well as Vice President General of SAR for the Mid-Atlantic District (Virginia\, District of Columbia\, Maryland\, Pennsylvania\, and Delaware). \nJohn Laycock – Mr. Laycock is a member of the Westminster Chapter of Sons of the American Revolution and a board member of the Historical Society of Carroll County. \nRegistration for this event is available on the Carroll County Public Library website. Visit https://ccpl.librarymarket.com/event/carroll-cemeteries to register today!
