This talk will cover how the USA celebrated the Centennial and the significance of a World\u2019s Fair. Local and Maryland participants in the Philadelphia Exposition (The World\u2019s Fair) will be included and local events held to commemorate 1876 will also be highlighted.<\/p>\n

Born and raised in Frederick County, Amy, her husband and her children have lived in Gettysburg, PA for the last 20 years. She enjoys genealogy, travel, reading and visiting cemeteries.<\/p>\n

Meet the Greek families who settled in Westminster in the early 1900s through the 1950s. They came from different areas of Greece, Cyprus, and Turkey, but they formed a strong community that supported one another through the Great Depression and the staff shortages of WWII. They helped one another establish a variety of businesses including hat-making, restaurants, department stores, theaters, and candy-making.<\/p>\n
Antigoni Lefteris Ladd is CEO of Tigrett Leadership Academy, developing and instructing leadership workshops. Prior to co-founding Tigrett Corp. with her husband, Antigoni was Senior Vice President of the Consumer Bankers Association and served for 15 years as Director of the Graduate School of Retail Bank Management at the University of Virginia. She has 40 years\u2019 experience in leadership education. Her management experience has been in both private industry and national trade associations.<\/p>\n

The Church of the Brethren [known officially as the German Baptists before 1908, and unofficially as Dunkers] first came to Maryland and what would become Carroll County in the mid-18th century. Brethren families, congregations, and institutions have played important roles in the county. This presentation will focus on Brethren beliefs, practices, and customs, as well as the contributions of Brethren to local history and their current presence and impact in the state, country, and worldwide.<\/p>\n
James Benedict is a pastor and scholar with four earned graduate degrees in theology and ethics. Born and reared in Iowa, Dr. Benedict has been a resident of Carroll County for thirty years. He served the Union Bridge Church of the Brethren as pastor for 20 years, before retiring in 2017. Since then, he has been a Scholar in Residence and adjunct professor in the Center for Global Health Ethics at Duquesne University while also serving part-time as an interim pastor at three congregations. He is married to Kathy, a teacher in the Frederick County School system, and they have three adult children and six grandchildren. Dr. Benedict\u2019s long-standing interest in the history of the Church of the Brethren has led him to teach courses on the subject and to write articles and book chapters for denominational publications.<\/p>\n

Throughout their 160-year occupation of the Union Mills Homestead, the Shriver family\u2019s six generations always enjoyed a drink. From whiskey to beer to cider to wine, what they drank and how they drank reflected changing times and culture in America. In this Box Lunch Talk, executive director Kyle Dalton will discuss the long history of politics, prohibition, and temperance at the Union Mills Homestead.<\/p>\n
As always, there is no registration for Box Lunch Talks. You bring your lunch, and we provide the drinks and desserts (thanks to our volunteers and staff). The cost is $3 for HSCC members and $5 for nonmembers.<\/p>\n
