SUMMARY:Carroll 250 Speaker Series: The Memory of Landscapes: A study of four historic National Parks within an hour’s drive of Carroll County
DESCRIPTION:Join presenter Winona R. Peterson\, retired NPS Cultural Resource Program Manager\, for this fun informative talk. \nAll landscapes have stories to tell; even the ones we interact with daily. This program will present compelling layers of history found at selected historic national park sites within an easy drive of Carroll County. We will explore the importance of nationally significant landscapes and the complexities of managing resources that have more than one significant story to share with the visiting public. The discussion will focus on how the National Park Service studies and manages these cultural landscapes. We will be visiting Hampton National Historic Site\, Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine\, Gettysburg National Military Park and Eisenhower National Historic Site. \nWinona R. Peterson graduated from the Pennsylvania State University with a BS in Recreation and Parks. She began and ended her 41-year career with the National Park Service at Gettysburg National Military Park. In between\, she worked at Everglades National Park\, Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine\, Hampton National Historic Site and Eisenhower National Historic Site. She was an interpretive park ranger\, an administrative clerk\, a chief ranger\, historian and a cultural resource specialist. During the last 5 years of her career\, she was the historian responsible for assessments completed at eight historic parks in the northeast region. Mrs. Peterson recently became a member of the Preservation Maryland Board of Directors\, an organization that has been at the forefront of historic preservation in Maryland for 90 plus years. She lives on a 90-acre farm in Carroll County with her husband Steve. \nRegistration is now open and is required.

SUMMARY:Carroll 250 Speaker Series: Accidental Citizen: Major General von Steuben and the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Join U.S. Army Historian Joseph Seymour for this presentation on Friederich Wilhelm von Steuben\, who proved to be among the more unlikely American revolutionaries. Rising through the ranks of the army of Frederick the Great\, von Steuben found himself in the service of a much different army\, in a much different setting—the Continental Army’s encampment at Valley Forge. Serving as a volunteer without pay or formal rank\, von Steuben took to the task of drilling George Washington’s army. His efforts paid off\, and in June 1778\, a newly reorganized and thoroughly drilled Continental Army marched out of Valley Forge. During the war\, von Steuben learned to appreciate the unique culture of the American soldier and earned the respect of privates and general officers alike. Von Steuben’s career in the Continental Army mirrored that of so many Continental Army veterans. He performed inestimable service to his adopted country\, but in his lifetime achieved neither great fame nor material wealth. As the decades passed\, successive generations of Americans\, many of whom\, like von Steuben\, were new arrivals from Germany\, came to recognize the old drillmaster for his service in the founding of the country. They took pride in his achievements and elevated him as a symbol of the contributions of German immigrants to the establishment of the United States. This presentation will trace his journey from a military adventurer to an American military icon. \nAbout the Presenter\nJoseph Seymour has worked as a U.S. Army historian since 2004 and presents regularly on this topic. His professional focus has been on organizational history\, the history\, and culture of the American soldier in the 18th century\, and the evolution of small arms and tactics during that era. Representative works include The Pennsylvania Associators\, 1747-1777 (Westholme Publishing\, 2012)\, “Light the Match Load Away: The Ordnance and Organizational Structure of the Philadelphia Artillery\, 1747 – 1777\,” American Society of Arms Collectors Bulletin (May – June 2006)\, and “A Chart Showing the Results of a 1779 Woolwich Ballistic Test\,” Military Collector

SUMMARY:Carroll 250 Speaker Series: Francis Scott Key presented by Lou Giles
DESCRIPTION:This fascinating talk will focus on Francis Scott Key and will include his family and early years\, the War of 1812 and the Dr. Beanes rescue mission\, the Star-Spangled Banner\, religion\, politics (and major cases)\, and his views on slavery. \nPlease check back for registration information regarding this FREE talk. Registration will go through Carroll County Public Library\, once their November Calendar is available. \nMr. Giles retired in 2012 as a senior executive in the Defense Department. He presently serves as the President of the Society of the War of 1812 in the State of Maryland\, a patriotic organization limited to descendants of soldiers who fought in the War of 1812\, and is a member of the Boards of Directors and counsel to the Star-Spangled Banner Flag House in Baltimore. Mr. Giles also volunteers at the Maryland State Archives in Annapolis and as a docent at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine in Baltimore. \nAs a passionate amateur historian and genealogist interested in the War of 1812 in Maryland\, Mr. Giles enjoys delving into primary sources\, local archives\, and historical newspapers to uncover new findings and perspectives and sharing these findings through writing\, presentations\, and community engagement. \nMr. Giles first became interested in Francis Scott Key in 2014 when he was tasked with providing presentations on Key to visitors to Fort McHenry. His genealogy experience and knowledge of resources available at the Maryland State Archives and National Archives allowed him to uncover records on Francis Scott Key that provide a different perspective from most biographers of Key. He has published several articles on Key\, including identifying Key’s truce ship on which he authored the Star-Spangled Banner and Key’s views on slavery. \nHe was recently featured in local and national press reporting after winning an appeal against the Veterans Administration resulting in a ruling allowing enslaved black Americans who fought in early Wars of the United States as servants or waiters to be considered veterans. \nMr. Giles is a lifelong Maryland resident who holds degrees in physics\, electrical engineering\, and law. \nRegistration is not yet open for this event. Please visit the CCPL website to see when registration will open.

DESCRIPTION:Few citizens of the early days of our republic recorded their experiences outside of pension applications; Samuel Dewees\, a long-time resident of Carroll County\, was an exception. During his lifetime\, he published his autobiography of the events he witnessed\, as a young drummer of the American Revolution\, through running off to defend Baltimore as an older man in the War of 1812. SUMMARY:Carroll 250 Speaker Series: "Travis Shaw and the Beeline March”
DESCRIPTION:“I am persuaded they will do great Execution:” The Maryland and Virginia Rifle Companies of 1775. \nOn June 14\, 1775\, the Continental Congress authorized the formation of several independent companies of riflemen to reinforce the New Englanders then besieging British-occupied Boston. Among the first to answer the call were four companies of men – two from western Maryland\, and two from Virginia – who made a remarkable journey to reach Washington’s army that has gone down in legend as the Bee Line March. Upon their arrival they made an immediate impact\, turning a New England army into truly Continental Army\, and further cementing the legend of the American marksman in history. \nTravis Shaw is the Director of Education for the Virginia Piedmont Heritage Area. Prior to joining VPHA Travis Shaw spent time at Historic St. Mary’s City\, The Maryland Archaeological Conservation Lab\, Mount Vernon\, and Oatlands Historic House and Gardens. He holds a BA in history from St. Mary’s College of Maryland\, and an MA in history with a concentration in public history from American University. \nTravis is former Vice President of the Loudoun Preservation Society and served on the Loudoun County Heritage Commission. He is currently a member of the Loudoun County 250th Commission. He is a guest contributor to the Emerging Revolutionary War series and has written several articles for the American Battlefield Trust. \nRegistration is requested for this free event.
