SUMMARY:Carroll 250 Speaker Series: Stephen G. Evangelista\, Civil War Historian & Author
DESCRIPTION:Join author and historian Stephen Evangelista for a fascinating event featuring his book\, No Sacrifice Too Great: The Letters and Diary of Sgt. Albert Aaron Straight. This compelling new book reveals the extraordinary story of Sergeant Straight\, a Rhode Island volunteer artilleryman who commanded the famed Gettysburg Gun on July 3\, 1863. Through his vivid letters and diary entries\, Straight offers a rare firsthand window into the experiences of Union soldiers during the American Civil War. \nDuring this program\, Stephen will discuss the discovery and preservation of Straight’s writings\, the historical significance of the Gettysburg Gun (the first Civil War relic and the only artillery piece still on its original gun carriage known to have seen action at Gettysburg)\, and how this remarkable narrative was brought to publication.

SUMMARY:Carroll 250 Speaker Series: After the Fashion of His Country – Asia and Asians in the 18th Century Mid-Atlantic
DESCRIPTION:This fascinating talk with be presented by Daniel Sieh. Asia was known for centuries in Europe\, and the British were keen to profit off the exotic goods through commerce. This trade was far from a one-sided exchange; it was a dialogue between two very distinct cultures. Goods\, ideas and people flowed through trade routes established by the British East India Company and reached as far as the 13 colonies (soon\, the nascent United States). These goods\, and yes\, even people\, arrived as distant foreigners in a strange land\, but left an indelible mark that has only recently been uncovered. \nVisit our website for registration information.
