DESCRIPTION:From 1938-1971\, English teacher\, William Granville “Mike” Eaton\, commanded his classroom at Westminster High School and directed excellent theatrical productions. Eaton lived in Thelma Hoffman’s boarding house\, a.k.a. Cockey’s Tavern\, owned by HSCC. Caroline Babylon and Kevin Dayhoff inherited Eaton’s extensive archive\, which will be set up in the Mike Eaton Room at HSCC this year. They also established the Mike Eaton Scholarship which is given each year to teachers nominated by their students. DESCRIPTION:Presented by Brian Booz \nBrian Booz started as a history/social studies teacher and coach in Carroll County Public Schools (CCPS) in the ’70s. He coached football and basketball and then started the lacrosse program. One of his students became an All-American lacrosse player for McDaniel. Brian went on to be the principal at Francis Scott Key\, South Carroll\, and Century High Schools\, before retiring from CCPS in 2002 and joining the faculty of Gettysburg College. DESCRIPTION:We are so excited to be able to finally feature Mr. Melvin Hurwitz being interviewed by Steve Bowersox in a discussion for everyone! This will be a FREE event. The event will start promptly at 1 pm. \nMr. Hurwitz grew up in Westminster\, MD to a family of local jewelry store owners. Melvin graduated from Westminster High School in 1942 and\, like his other three brothers\, joined the service during World War II. Mr. Hurwitz was a waist gunner and radio man on a B-17 that flew bombing missions over Europe. \nMore recently Melvin has become a bit of an international celebrity because he attended the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings. \nHe will celebrate his 100th birthday in March 2025. SUMMARY:Carroll 250 Speaker Series: Finding the Maryland 400: Maryland’s First War Heroes
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Owen Lourie \nIn August 1776\, the Continental Army suffered a terrible defeat at the Battle of Brooklyn\, the first major battle of the Revolutionary War. The battle nearly saw the complete destruction of the American army\, but a desperate stand by a contingent of Maryland soldiers helped to stave off the British and allow the Americans to fight another day. \nLearn more about these soldiers\, now called the Maryland 400\, and hear first-hand accounts of their actions at the battle\, including comments from George Washington’s aide Tench Tilghman\, a native of Talbot County. This talk will also discuss the lives of several soldiers from the unit\, exploring them and their families during and after the Revolutionary War \nThis talk is drawn from research which is the basis for a forthcoming book about the Maryland 400 and the experiences of Maryland’s soldiers during the war. To learn more about\, visit https://msamaryland400.com/. \nOwen Lourie is a historian at the Maryland State Archives specializing in Maryland government and military history during the colonial era and early republic. He holds an M.A. in history from the University of Maryland\, Baltimore County and a B.A. from Kenyon College in American Studies. Owen is the director of Finding the Maryland 400\, a research project studying the First Maryland Regiment.  He is the author of “Maryland’s Jews\, Military Service\, and the American Revolutionary Era: The Case of Elias Pollock\,” an article which appeared in The Journal of Southern Jewish History and is currently at work on a social history of the Maryland Line\, chronicling the soldiers of the Maryland 400 during the Revolutionary War.

DESCRIPTION:Presented by John Laycock:  It is Christmas 1776\, and all is not well for George Washington and his Continental Army. They have suffered a string of defeats and have retreated into New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Fighting through a blizzard and smallpox\, Maryland Militia reinforcements start filling the New Jersey countryside. The story of Private Jacob Zoll and his company led by Captain John Ross Key is an under looked part of the Revolutionary War. This talk will share Private Zoll’s struggle as he begins his journey to fight for his liberty. \nMr. Laycock has a love of genealogy and local history. He is a member of the Westminster Sons of the American Revolution and the Historical Society of Carroll County. He lives in Sykesville with his wife and 3 kids. He can often be found watching his beloved Chicago Cubs and still can’t believe that they finally won it all.

DESCRIPTION:This year we will celebrate the history of Westminster High School (WHS) a community staple for 125 years. Steve Bowersox will highlight the achievements of WHS and its graduates and the commitment to the community that they have made. Bring you memories to share during the celebration. \nThis is a free event and no registration is required. We will have cake and beverages to help celebrate WHS 125th and Carroll County’s 188th Birthday. We look forward to seeing everyone there! \nThe snow date for this event is Saturday\, February 1st.

SUMMARY:Box Lunch Talk: An Afternoon Talk with Melvin Hurwitz & Steve Bowersox
DESCRIPTION:Canceled \nMr. Hurwitz grew up in Westminster\, MD to a family of a local jewelry store owner. Melvin graduated from Westminster High School in 1942 and\, like his other three brothers\, joined the service during World War II. Mr. Hurwitz was a waist gunner and radio man on a B-17 that flew bombing missions over Europe. \nMore recently Melvin has become a bit of an international celebrity because he attended the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings. \nHe will celebrate his 100th birthday in March 2025. He will share stories of his life in Westminster and beyond. \nAs always\, there is no registration for Box Lunch Talks. You bring your lunch\, and we provide the drinks and desserts (thanks to our volunteers and staff). The cost is $3 for HSCC members and $7 for nonmembers.

DESCRIPTION:Untold Stories of the Civil Rights Movement\nJoin us for a drink at Covalent Spirits Westminster on January 9th at 6pm as HSCC continues History: Shaken and Stirred. Once again there will be five speakers telling three 5-minute\, untold\, local history stories shared with the crowd in a fun\, relaxed setting. This quarter\, Untold Stories of the Civil Rights will be told. A special history-themed drink will be developed by owners Jenn and Drew. Please have dinner before you come\, as the refreshments are light and meant for snacking. Light refreshments provided by Collision Course.
