DESCRIPTION:This year’s 189th Carroll County Birthday Party will also start the celebration of the 250th Birthday of the United States of America. The title of the celebration … \nPatrician Patriot: Charles Carroll and his Fellow Maryland Signers \nCharles Carroll of Carrollton and three other Marylanders were among the fifty-six men who signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776\, pledging their lives\, fortunes\, and sacred honor in support of America’s revolutionary cause. Historian Glenn E. Campbell profiles the personal lives and political careers of Charles Carroll and his fellow Maryland Signers: Samuel Chase\, William Paca\, and Thomas Stone. \nGlenn E. Campbell earned degrees in History from the U.S. Naval Academy and University of Maryland\, College Park. Following his naval service\, he joined the staff of Historic Annapolis in 1997 and was named Senior Historian of the non-profit historic preservation and education group in 2008. Since retiring in 2022\, Mr. Campbell has pursued his passion for international travel while remaining engaged in public history as an independent scholar. \nThis is a free event and no registration is required. We will have cake and beverages to help celebrate Carroll County’s 189th Birthday and the 250th Birthday of the United States. DESCRIPTION:From 1938-1971\, English teacher\, William Granville “Mike” Eaton\, commanded his classroom at Westminster High School and directed excellent theatrical productions. Eaton lived in Thelma Hoffman’s boarding house\, a.k.a. Cockey’s Tavern\, owned by HSCC. Caroline Babylon and Kevin Dayhoff inherited Eaton’s extensive archive\, which will be set up in the Mike Eaton Room at HSCC this year. They also established the Mike Eaton Scholarship which is given each year to teachers nominated by their students. DESCRIPTION:Presented by Brian Booz \nBrian Booz started as a history/social studies teacher and coach in Carroll County Public Schools (CCPS) in the ’70s. He coached football and basketball and then started the lacrosse program. One of his students became an All-American lacrosse player for McDaniel. Brian went on to be the principal at Francis Scott Key\, South Carroll\, and Century High Schools\, before retiring from CCPS in 2002 and joining the faculty of Gettysburg College. Mr. Hurwitz was a waist gunner and radio man on a B-17 that flew bombing missions over Europe. \nMore recently Melvin has become a bit of an international celebrity because he attended the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings. \nHe will celebrate his 100th birthday in March 2025.
